ABSTRACT

Osteosarcoma is the most commonly diagnosed malignant bone tumor in humans, with a higher incidence in children and young people. It is highly aggressive and has a high metastatic potential. Its treatment is based on both chemotherapy and surgical intervention. However, currently used chemotherapeutic agents, such as doxorubicin, have several adverse effects on the patient. Therefore, there is a growing demand for new chemotherapeutic agents that stimulate new researches, such as those involving compounds extracted from plants, such as the gabirobeira. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the cytotoxic effects of ethanolic extract, both crude and ethyl acetate, of gabirobeira leaves on osteosarcoma cells in vitro. Cytotoxicity was evaluated using the Trypan blue exclusion method and the IC50 values were calculated using the tetrazolium reduction method. The ethanolic extract of gabirobeira leaves showed a cytotoxic effect on osteosarcoma cells in vitro. The group treated with the crude extract at 1. 0& 956;L mL-1 concentration for 48 hours showed higher cytotoxicity and the lowest IC50 value for this extract was found in the 24 to 48 hours interval. The ethanolic extract of gabirobeira leaves is cytotoxic for osteosarcoma cells.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The gabirobeira is a species native to the Brazilian Cerrado with potential for use in cropping systems. This study evaluated the effect of the cytokinin 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) on root cuttings of gabirobeira (Campomanesia adamantium). The plant material was obtained from gabirobeira progenies of one and two-years-old. The cuttings were segmented in 5 cm length and 1.90 to 3.22 mm diameter, immersed in the following BAP concentrations: 0.0; 1.0; 2.0 and 4.0 mg L-1 for 15 seconds and planted in trays containing the substrate Bioplant®. A complete randomized experimental design was adopted in a factorial scheme 2x4, (cuttings age x BAP concentrations) with fifteen replicates per treatment. After 140 days the number of cuttings with shoots, number of shoots, number of leaves, and diameter of the main root were evaluated. The better development of the cuttings was observed on progenies of two-years-old. The lowest cytokinin concentrations promoted the better emission and number of shoots of the progenies from both ages.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Brazilian Savannah native fruits have been investigated as potential sources of antioxidant substances. Cagaita, cerrado cashew and gabiroba were characterized with regard to the ascorbic acid and phenolic contents, antioxidant capacity and flavonoids composition. Gabiroba presented higher contents of ascorbic acid (61.5 mg.100 g-1), total phenolic compounds (1,222.59 mg GAE.100 g-1), and antioxidant capacity (DPPH, FRAP and ORAC assays) than cagaita and cerrado cashew. The correlation coefficients between total ascorbic acid or total phenolic contents and antioxidant capacity were strong and significant (0.970 ≤ r ≤ 0.998). Quercetin derivatives were found in cagaita (1.94 mg.100 g-1) and myricetin derivatives in cerrado cashew (1.2 mg.100 g-1). Peonidin 3-glucoside was the main anthocyanin in cerrado cashew, and its flavonoids composition was first identified in this study. Gabiroba showed relevant catechin content (23.32 mg.100 g-1). These Brazilian native fruits may be considered as important sources of bioactive compounds, notably gabiroba, since it presents high phenolic contents and antioxidant capacity.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Guavira fruits have antimicrobial, antioxidant, antinociceptive, and anti-inflammatory activities. Spray drying has been widely used in the food industry presenting good retention in bioactive compounds used to transform the pulp/fruit juice into powder form. Therefore, the present study has evaluated the anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activities of the microencapsulated pulp of Campomanesia adamantium (Cambess.) O.Berg, Myrtaceae, by spray drying. Different groups of mice were treated with the doses of 100 and 300 mg/kg of microencapsulated "guavira" pulp and inflammatory parameters were assessed in a carrageenan paw edema-model and leukocyte migration with pleurisy model, while the antinociceptive activity was assessed using the formalin method and CFA-induced hyperalgesia model. A significant reduction in leukocyte migration and in paw edema was observed in rodents in all time after carrageenan injection for both doses of microencapsulated pulp of C. adamantium when compared with control group. Microencapsulated pulp of C. adamantium also reduced licking time at the first (nociceptive) and second (inflammatory) phases in the formalin model. In CFA-induced cold and mechanical hyperalgesia, depressive behavior, and knee edema, all parameters analyzed were significantly inhibited by microencapsulated pulp of C. adamantium. Microencapsulation by spray drying proved to be a technique that promotes bioavailability and the preservation of bioactive components in guavira pulp.

ABSTRACT

The guavira present characteristic flavor and scent that are pleasant taste, and they can be eaten in natura or processed, present short life spam, even when stored in refrigerator. The objective of this work was to evaluate the post-harvest conservation of guavira at different temperatures and coatings. The fruit, harvested in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, received the following treatments: 1) and 2) immersion in a solution of chitosan (1% w/v) (CH1%) and 3% (% CH3), respectively for 10 minutes, 3) placing in trays coated with flexible plastic film (PVC) and 4) no treatment trays (NT). They were stored for 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 days in the refrigerator (RE): 10 ± 5 ° C / 60 ± 5% RH) and cold (C): 5 ± 2 ° C / 85 ± 5% RH). The design was randomized in factorial scheme 5 (types of coating) x 2 (environments) x 5 (periods of evaluation). The covers were effective in slowing the increase in soluble solids but the acidity was lower in PVC and% CH1. The PVC cover and C increased the content of soluble sugars and reducing sugars. The guaviras can be stored for up to 12 days on cold and coated with PVC.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of five spacing between plants and the use or not of semi-decomposed chicken manure incorporated into the soil on the biomass production of plants and on the levels of phenols, flavonoids and antioxidant activity of the extract of C. adamantium fruits. The experiment was carried out in the Medicinal Plant Garden - HPM, of Federal University of Grande Dourados/UFGD, in Dourados-Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. C. adamantium was studied under five spacing between plants in a row (0.30; 0.35; 0.40; 0.45 and 0.50 m) and with and without semi-decomposed chicken manure incorporated in the soil, at a dose of 10 t ha-1. Treatments were arranged as 5 x 2 factorial, in randomized block design, with four replicates. At 390 days after transplanting, the plants had 54.89 cm height, 10.01 mm stem diameter and 178.27 leaves per plant. The longitudinal (17.34 mm) and transverse (18.07 mm) diameters of the fruits did not vary with the spacing or with the use of chicken manure. The largest number (28.56 fruits plant-1) and greatest fresh weight (83.65 g plant-1) of fruits were obtained for plants cultivated under spacing of 0.32 and 0.35 m between plants, respectively, independent of the use of chicken manure. The chicken manure induced a significant increase in phenol content and reduced flavonoid content and the antioxidant activity of the fruit pulp. The chicken manure did not influence the productivity of C. adamantium or the chemical composition of fruits. The use of spacing of 0.35 m between plants and 1.50 m between rows is recommended, with the aim of producing fruits.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this trial was to evaluate the initial development of Campomanesia adamantium grown under different phosphorus and nitrogen rates. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at the Universidade Federal da Grande Dourados, Dourados-MS. It was studied five phosphorus rates (20, 120, 200, 280 and 380 kg ha-1) in the form of superphosphate and five nitrogen rates (6, 36, 60, 84 and 114 kg ha-1) in the form of ammonium sulfate. Treatments were defined using the Plan Puebla experimental matrix, resulting in nine combinations, respectively, of phosphorus and nitrogen (kg ha-1): 280 and 84, 280 and 36, 120 and 6, 120 and 36, 120 and 84, 200 and 60, 380 and 84, 20 and 36 and 280 and 114. The experimental design was randomized block with four replications. Experimental unit consisted of five vessels, with one plant per pot. The trial harvest was carried out 270 days after transplanting (DAT). Highest rates of N and P resulted on the greatest plant height (38.12 cm) reached after 261 DAT, maximum number of leaves per plant (54) at 186 DAT, highest dry weight of leaves (13.99 and 5.68 g plant-1) and root (15.9 and 6.2 g plant-1), greatest leaf area (610 cm² plant-1) and number of branches (3 planta-1), all at 270 DAT. The average of Chlorophyll levels was 36 ICF. Thus, it's recommend the supply of high doses of phosphorus (380 kg ha-1) and nitrogen (114 kg ha-1) for guavira cultivation.

ABSTRACT

The essential oils from Campomanesia adamantium (Cambess.) O. Berg leaves, collected in the reproductive (flowering and fruit-bearing) and vegetative stages, were characterized by GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry). A total of 95 compounds of the essential oils were identified. In the reproductive stage (flowering) the major constituents were monoterpenes (limonene, α-pinene and β-pinene) while during the vegetative stage the major constituents were the sesquiterpenes (bicyclogermacrene and globulol). The essential oil of the reproductive stage shows high antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans, and all show moderate activity against Escherichia coli. The essential oils were also evaluated for their radical-scavenging activity by DPPH. The chemogeographical variations of the oil composition from the four distinct localities studied all contained α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene, linalool, β-caryophyllene, germacrene D and bicyclogermacrene, however the samples from Jardim city contained neither limonene nor linalool.
